Making my own Copic Marker Storage Unit

January 31, 2013 by Kat 7 Comments

So I couldn’t sleep the other night and I started pinning (Pinterest) and I ran across this ingenious idea for copic marker storage so I thought I’d give it a try since my little red utensil holder was bulging with markers from my growing collection.

I headed over to Office Max and picked up this “Really Useful Box” in the 11 litre size for $8.00 (on sale):

It comes with a really cool insert that looks like this:

Then I ran over to Home Depot and picked up this egg crate lighting stuff (technical term lol) for $12.97:

I measured it and started cutting it so that it was just a big tight when I put it in the box.  I cut two layers.  One for the bottom of the box and one for the middle to top area.  I put a dab of hot glue in each corner and voila! A copic marker holder.  Only there was one problem.  Mine looks nothing like the original!

Here is my sad little copic collection in my sad little container:

On the positive side, there is a LOT of room to grow! But I really should have thought about the size of MY collection before I followed the original instructions!  It takes up SO MUCH ROOM in my scrap room so I am pretty sure I’m going to take it apart and use it for some other type of storage and just go with the ArtBin Marker Storage Sathel which is product that I sell in the Kat Scrappiness store.

There is an extra marker insert that you can buy for a few bucks to put in the back if you’d rather have more marker space and don’t need to put 6×6 papers in there and I think that will be more than enough for me for now (for awhile actually!)

I saw it, I pinned it, I tried it….and I’ll be taking it apart tomorrow lol  But hey, it was a learning experience, right?  You could always modify this project to fit a smaller box if you have a smaller collection like mine or if you have the whole copic collection and have room, this may work for you!  Kudos to the original pinner’s husband for coming up with the idea and executing it so well!

I agree, this is an ingenious idea! Now you just have to buy more Copics! I use a wooden utensil carrier, with the six open compartments, and it is very compact for the desktop.

i love the idea and even your execution of your diy marker storage, but i totally understand not being cool with it taking up so much space. i do like the art bin tote as well. they never let me down. although, i really like and use the soft marker storage thingies from copic. they’re a little pricey if you have a fair collection of markers but i really like how they keep my markers and take up minimal space…

good luck finding something that is just right for you!

Well done for trying it and staying positive even though it wasn’t the perfect solution! Of course you could just buy more pens to fill it up…! x
