Homemade Photo Studio Light Box using Foam Board

October 23, 2011 by Kat 10 Comments

Because I need to take pictures of the products I made for Kat Scrappiness as well as for my handmade cards and scrapbook pages to share, I recently bought a home photo studio light box from Amazon.com.   It was VERY poorly made and didn’t do anything for my pictures at all and I was so disappointed with the quality that I actually ended up returning it.   I decided to do some research before purchasing another.  After several days of searching online, I decided to try to make my own.  This is what I did.

I went to the Dollar Store and bought bought 4 white foam boards for $1.00 each. I grabbed my razor knife and a roll of masking tape and I sat down to make my new light studio.

*Note:  You don’t have to make yours as large as mine, I chose this size so that my scrapbook pages would fit without any trouble.

I cut three of the foam boards down to 24″ inches and left one full size.  Using masking tape, I taped the four sides together, leaving the longest board for the bottom of the box.  Here are some pictures.  This first picture is the box  from the front view.

This picture shows the box from the side view.

And the last picture is taken from the back of the box.

Voila!  I now have a foam board photo studio light box that cost me $4.00 to make and took about 10 minutes at most.  All I have to do is put down a colored sheet of paper or material, add my product, point some lights at it and snap the pictures!  I plan on re-photographing all of my products a little at a time until I have better pictures for the Kat Scrappiness website.

If you have any questions about how I did this, please feel free to leave a comment.  It was so inexpensive and easy, I would recommend this project for anyone who wants to take pictures of their cards, scrapbook pages and/or products for sale online.  Hope this helps someone!

Looks great. When I redo my crafty area I think I’ll keep this in mind. I bought a friend a light box for his birthday several years ago and it was so complicated to set up he never ended up using it. This sounds like a much better solution!

Great idea for a light box! I have products that need to be photographed. I use foam boards for taking portraits.
The boards are good for softing the faces. Removes wrinkles that Srs may have, and makes them look younger.
I place the foam board on a table in front of the subject,
    at about waist level.
