As you know my youngest son Tyler, has autism and can come up with some interesting comments and questions from time to time. It’s absolutely incredible to get a glimpse into how he sees the world so I thought I’d share a couple of things that he said yesterday.
*Note* This is not in any way meant to disrespect Michael Jackson or the serious nature of his passing but it is something that happened so I’m passing it along exactly as it happened.
This morning, we were watching a tribute to Michael Jackson on TV and it showed Michael singing as a child. In obvious and complete shock, Tyler asked
“You mean Michael Jackson used to be black?”
That was a hard one to explain since I didn’t know the appropriate explanation other than “he had a medical condition”. It turned into a long conversation about whether you can be born one race and change later if you wanted!
Later in the afternoon I had just finished watching a movie (I’ve Loved You So Long – French w/English subtitles) and was all teary eyed when Tyler walked into the room and asked me why I was crying. I told him I just finished watching a really good movie and he asked
“Was it sad? Is that why you were crying?”
I answered,
“No, it wasn’t sad, it was touching”.
Tyler looked at me quite confused and in TOTAL disbelief and then asked
“How can a movie touch you like that?”
He thought I was saying that the movie literally, physically TOUCHED me and beside himself! I explained that when I said it was “touching”, I meant that the movie “made me feel different emotions” and then he asked,
“Is your heart or your brain your emotional tool?”
That’s a tiny peek of everyday life through the eyes of a sweet little soul with autism.
I love you Tyler (MORE!)
