Talk about Far out! NASA Astronauts sending tweets from outer space while on board the space shuttle Atlantis!
Although Mike Massimino’s (Astro_Mike) has been “tweeting” about the shuttle mission since April, on Tuesday he became the first person to “tweet” from space. His tweets are especially fun to read because you can just FEEL his excitement leading up to the launch. Every little boy or girl, can truly imagine what it is like to be an astronaut by following the mission online. Here are a few of his tweets:
“Just finished dinner with my crew and our spouses, this is our first night in quarantine in florida after 5 quarantine days in houston” (May 8th)
“Finished my final fitcheck in my orange spacesuit and my parachute harness, packed my pockets with survival gear” (May 9th)
“Final check with the doctors, getting ready for breakfast. We launch today!!” (May 11th)
I’m going to put my spacesuit on, next stop: Earth Orbit!!” (May 11th)
“From orbit: Launch was awesome!! I am feeling great, working hard, & enjoying the magnificent views, the adventure of a lifetime has begun!” (May 12)
“From orbit: Getting more accustomed to living in space today and getting ready for our big rendezvous with hubble” (May 13th)
The latest tweet from Mike Mossimino as of the writing of this post is:
“From orbit: Rendezvous and grapple were great, getting ready for our first spacewalk” (May 14th)
Mark Polansky (Astro_127) is the mission commander and is also tweeting. Something really cool he is doing is answering questions from kids (via youtube). Here is an example of one of his tweets:
“Here’s the first question I’ll answer from orbit: http://ow.ly/6IBu Post your question: http://ow.ly/6IA4, & tweet your link @Astro_127.” (May 14th)
I find this just fascinating and can be a great homeschooling project for my son. For more fun facts, pictures, videos, etc., visit NASA’s website. You can also follow NASA on Twitter!
