My New $42.00 Island Scrapbooking Desk

April 18, 2012 by Kat 10 Comments

As you may know I’ve been working on moving my two scrap rooms into one room which is our living room (we never use it) and in my new room I wanted an island scrapbooking desk that I could stand at and do bigger projects (cutting felt, fabric, etc.).  This was my dream desk:

but it was expensive.  So, with the help of pinterest, I decided to make my own thrift store version (lol).

I found two closetmaid shelving units with the cubbies at Goodwill for $14.99 each and a countertop at Builders Workshop (where Habitat Humanity donates their left overs) for $12.00.  This is what they looked like when I got them. (PS Can you find the silly teenage boy in this picture?)

Then I purchased some laminate counter top paint at WalMart and painted the counter top black to match my room.  With Abby’s help, I laid down a red rug as you can see below:

Next, I positioned the closetmaid shelves where I wanted them, and laid the counter top on top of the shelves and voila!  Instant Island Scrapbooking Desk!  It’s not as “pretty” as the pottery barn desk but then again I only paid $42.00 for it in total! (Two brownie points if you find the silly teenage boy in this picture too!)

Here is a picture of it now filled with my stuff!

I’m not completely finished with it because I want to get some pretty baskets for the cubbies and I may end up swapping out the counter top at some point with a piece of mdf or plywood because my counter top ended up being about 2 inches short on one side but for now I can live with it!   (I have to because of budget restraints! LOL)

So that’s how I built my $42.00 Island Scrapbooking Desk. If you have any questions about the measurements or  how I did this, just leave a comment and I’ll get back to you via email.

Did you create your own crafting table? I’d love to see it!  Just leave a comment and a link below!

This is awesome Kat! Your room is coming along great! Where is the Builder’s Workshop? Is it in Bremerton somewhere? I’ve never heard of it but it sounds awesome!!!

Oh, I think it looks FAB, what a great find & it turned out wonderful! I spy the little boy & big puppy..both very cute..lol I have an island table I bought from Pier one a few years ago, but I don’t have the space to use it as an island, so it’s just a taller desk, which is still nice, but would be better If I could use for it’s purpose.

This is awesome! You got everything at a great value too. I don’t know where to begin to find bargains so your post is very helpful!

It’ll just be impossible to ask DH to haul heavy stuff back for me though. sigh…

I love it Kat. Sorry it has taken me so long to leave a comment. I think your room looks FABULOUS! Today at target I saw that they had red and white CHEVRON patter baskets. I immediately thought of you and Alex lol.
