I saw a video on YouTube awhile back that showed how to make your own enamel dots so my friend Elisha and I thought we’d give it a try. I used the following products:
Viva Decor Paper Pens in the following colors:
- Graphite
- Gold
- Silver
- Sunny Yellow
- Rose
- Dark Carmine
We each cut off a piece of wax paper (first mistake) and starting to make our dots. We experimented with making different sized dots and here is what they looked like when we finished (but before they dried):

Elisha’s:
Elisha took her home and we both let them dry over night. I don’t have a photo of how hers turned out but here is how mine looked when I woke up the next morning:
My Dried Enamel Dots:
As you can see, most of them turned out good, but a few were mushed together (my fault) and there were some air bubbles in the silver and gold. I can tell you that the silver and gold paper pens came out more watery than the others and it was more difficult to make them look perfect. The other colors are thicker and easier to control. Also, wax paper is not the best thing to adhere them to because as you can see, it got all “warpy”. Next time, I’ll space them out better and will put them on either transparency or laminated cardstock.
Making your own enamel dots is a lot of fun and MUCH LESS EXPENSIVE than the $3.99 on the pre-made ones you can purchase. So if you have ever wanted to use enamel dots but don’t want to spend the money on them, invest in a few paper pens and make your own! Each pen makes a LOT of enamel dots and you can control the size of each one!
Here are the current colors offered by Viva Decor for the paper pens:
I hope this post was helpful and/or interesting. If you have a specific product you’d like to see a demonstration of, leave a comment and let me know. I’ll do my best to help!

I saw on another blog where they melted pony beads to make enamel dots. Have you tried that?

Not yet, are those the same as perler beads? I’ve heard of people doing that. My friend Elisha is supposed to bring some of those over and we are going to try that though! I’ll be sure to post when we do.

You can use parchment paper and your paper won’t warp like that. And the dots will lift really easily.
